PUTTIN’ ON THE GLITZ The sight of people arriving in elegant and period dress at this inaugural Chocolate Ball is in keeping with the Liuna Station’s history. It’s back to the early 50's. It's back to the glitz and glamour days of New York and Hollywood. This year we’re “Puttin’ on the Ritz”, an expression inspired by the swanky Ritz Hotel which gave way to a popular song written by Irving Berlin in 1929 and introduced in the 1930’s film “Puttin’ on the Ritz” – meaning to dress very fashionably – referring to the then-poplar fad of well-dressed affluent people strutting “up and down Park Avenue in New York”. The song was made famous in the 1946 movie “Blue Skies” starring Fred Astaire. Once the magic of television came in, evidence of fashion trends reaching the West Coast was evident when celebrities became the fashion icons of their day, being seen attending the first Academy Awards and premieres. The glamour of Hollywood then took hold with the likes of Marilyn Munroe, Joan Crawford, Natalie Wood, Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Gary Cooper, Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth, Katherine Hepburn, Barbara Stanwyck, Errol Flynn, James Stewart and others. Today’s glitzarrazi would include everyone from Elton John to Madonna, Cher to Celine Dion. |
